Sonny Houston is a Dahlonega, Georgia, resident originally from the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. He has maintained a life-long interest in the music and culture of the Appalachian coalfields.  Born and raised in an East Kentucky coal camp, he learned the rudiments of four-part a cappella harmony singing from his family and the Hemphill Church of Christ. He sought out local musicians who taught him to play guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and bass. He is known for the haunting power of his Appalachian folk music singing and his dexterity and versatility as an instrumentalist.

Sonny has collected field recordings for the Appalachian Oral History Project at Alice Lloyd College as well as for his personal archives. He has produced two recordings under his own name and has assisted in the production of more than a dozen nationally distributed recordings of important coalfield musicians and singers. Sonny has appeared locally with the Sonny Houston Band and Gold Rush, and he is also a member of the Atlanta Bluegrass AllStars. In Dahlonega, he is an instructor with the Georgia Pick and Bow Traditional Music School.
